The 2023 Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) will be held in Chinese Taipei School (Kuala Lumpur) on 20 May 2023 (Saturday). Online registration for TOCFL will be open from 1st March till 10th April 2023.
The TOCFL Kuala Lumpur is organized by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia and the Chinese Taipei School (Kuala Lumpur) to encourage the learning of Mandarin (Huayu) in Malaysia.
In a preparatory meeting held on 1 March 2023, Charlin Chang, the Education Director of TECO
mentioned that the TOCFL acts as a useful and standardized assessment tool for Huayu proficiency levels which is in corresponds with CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines. Many undergraduate and graduate programs offered by universities in Taiwan require a TOCFL certificate for admission or as a reference for an applicant’s Chinese proficiency. The TOCFL certificate can serve as proof of Chinese proficiency for applying for a Taiwan Scholarship and obtaining bonus points under the new appraisal system for Overseas Chinese and international students who want to remain in Taiwan to work. She encourages Malaysian who are currently learning Mandarin, and students of public or international schools to sit TOCFL to assess their Mandarin proficiency level.
Cheng Ya Fen, Principal of the Chinese Taipei School (Kuala Lumpur) added that Mandarin is currently one of the most popular languages as the officials and corporates prefer talents who are multilingual. With over a billion language users, Mandarin is now one of the most spoken languages in the world. Learning a new language is a bonus to one’s competitiveness in this global marketplace and effective communication for mutual understanding in a multicultural society. She also encourages students from Chinese Taipei School as well as the public to take the opportunity to sit for the test. The Chinese Taipei School Kuala Lumpur comprises a kindergarten, primary school, middle school, and high school and presents trilingual teaching with Chinese, English, and Malay. The school is offering Chinese language classes to the public as an effort to promote the study of the Chinese language abroad.
There are three bands available for 2023 TOCFL in Malaysia, which are Band A, Band B, and Band C, and there are both simplified and traditional Mandarin test papers available for each band. Candidates who pass the test will receive a certificate from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan which can be used as a reference document for Chinese Language Proficiency Level for university applications or job hunting.
