The 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad was held from June 3 to June 9 at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Kampar campus in Perak, to encourage more young people to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. It drew a total of 208 student participants from 26 countries and regions across Asia and the Oceanic regions. Each national or regional team comprises up to eight student competitors. The teams compete in two five-hour sections: a theoretical examination comprising three questions, and a laboratory experiment involving one or two experiments.
The team made Taiwan proud by clinching 3 Gold and 5 Silver awards, ranking fifth in this Asian Physics Olympiad. The eight team members were selected from a total of 2,137 students from 157 schools across Taiwan through a four-stage selection process. The team was then trained and coached by a group of professors from universities in Taiwan.
The team delegation, led by Professor Chen Chuan-Ren 陳傳仁 from National Taiwan Normal University, included retired Professor Tsai Shang-Fang 蔡尚芳 formerly at National Taiwan University, Professor Chu Chon-saar朱仲夏 from National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University. and Associate Professor Fang-Yuh Lo駱芳鈺from National Taiwan Normal University.
After the Olympiad, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia. James Buu 卜正珉, Taiwan’s Deputy Representative in Malaysia, warmly welcomed the delegation and presented a congratulatory message from Minister of Education Cheng Ying-Yao鄭英耀, congratulating the team for their great achievements.
The Olympiad provided all the participants with opportunities to learn about different cultures and network with experts and young people from other countries. The students also gained insights into the standards of science and physics and gauged how they compare to other top-performing students.
